Good morning Cedar Grove! |
When you are reading this I will be attending the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando. My job as a messenger of Cedar Grove is to represent our values and convictions. This is done by me casting my vote for the various amendments and resolutions that are brought to the floor during the business portion. I would like you to be informed on some of the more significant issues at this year's convention. |
Here is a link to all of the resolutions that will be presented and voted on this year. It is important to understand that a resolution is not the same as an amendment. An amendment is simply a formally expressed opinion and stance on a certain topic. These typically are in sync with the cultural issues of the day. We will be voting on resolutions regarding religious liberty, care for persons with disabilities, assisted suicide and the sanctity of life, political violence and speech, antisemitism, immigration, human dignity and the rule of law, and even the importance of physically gathering in church in the digital age. These resolutions do not hold any official power, but it does help to bring unity of conviction for the SBC. |
There is going to be an amendment brought to the floor this week as well. Dr. Albert Mohler is bringing an amendment to make the language stronger regarding women's role in ministry. This amendment is called "The Truth and Unity Amendment" and will propose to add a sixth point under Article III, paragraph 1 of the SBC constitution. The amendment reads as follows... |
a cooperating church in the SBC: "Does not act to affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, such as preaching to the assembled congregation." |
I am sure there will be much debate and details of exactly what this intends to govern in the name of cooperation. I agree with the language already used and believe it to be clear and evident enough, but I am open to learn more about this amendment. |
We are also voting for a new president. Clint Pressley has finished his second term and will be replaced. The candidates are Willy Rice and Josh Powell. These men do not necessarily have authority to make changes, but they do hold great influence on the direction of our convention. So, it does matter. |
My favorite part of the entire conference is the International Mission Board Missionary "send off." Through our offerings and cooperation financially, we are able to send 71 newly appointed missionaries to "go ye therefore" and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is one of those moments you do not soon forget as we pray for each and every individual, couple and family. |
Today is the Pastor's Conference. This is a time that I will be able to get my cup filled! There will be great preaching and worship the entire day. I truly appreciate you sending me to the convention. |
The theme this year is "Walking Worthy." The scripture is "Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." Eph 4:1–3. |
That's exactly what God calls us to do. I encourage you to continue to walk worthy of the calling God has given you Cedar Grove. I love you and I would not want to represent and serve as messenger for any other local church! I will see you soon. Happy in the Lord, amen. Buh-bye. |

Your Pastor, |
